David’s Harp is an independent nonprofit serving low- and no-income adults who have a severe and persistent mental illness. David’s Harp was founded in 1978 through the grassroots efforts of over 100 volunteers and mental health professionals, making it the first (and oldest) operation of its kind in Multnomah County. We are small, but mighty. We do a lot with a little, making every dollar count. We have no administrative staff and minimal overhead. David’s Harp provides a daytime clubhouse setting where adults with major and persistent mental illness are provided with socialization and skill-building activities such as art and music therapy, occupational therapy, gardening, cultural events, and daily community outings. David’s Harp services reduce re-hospitalization, recidivism, and chronic homelessness among the mentally ill. David’s Harp serves about 100 adult clients each year, providing 17,380 hours of programming annually. Most of the healthy world has a wealth of support to access: friends, family, hobbies, employment, peers, and social gatherings. David’s Harp aims to provide what everyone needs, and what our clients unfortunately live without, which is acceptance, friendships, and meaningful engagement.
